More details about the ASLU  Unit Testing CDs:

I recorded a series of videos to test my ASL University distance education students.  Later I converted the videos into files and placed the files on CDs.  Each video contains hundreds of questions and are great for checking your progress. Versions of the practice sentences and vocabulary from the website are presented in full motion as numbered questions.   Each video covers a whole unit (five lessons) so the tests are somewhat long.  For example, the first video has 321 questions!

[Level 1 Series]
The Unit 1 CD corresponds to lessons 1-5
The Unit 2 CD corresponds to lessons 6-10
The Unit 3 CD corresponds to lessons 11-15
The Unit 4 CD corresponds to lessons 16-20

[Level 2 Series]
The Unit 5 CD corresponds to lessons 21-25
The Unit 6 CD corresponds to lessons 26-30
The Unit 7 CD corresponds to lessons 31-35
The Unit 8 CD corresponds to lessons 36-40

Note:  These CDs are in PC format. The video files are in Windows Media Format.  When you click on the link they play using your Windows Media Player (which is already installed in most computers with Windows operating systems) or "Real Player." While you are waiting for them to arrive, I recommend you install the latest version of Windows Media Player (FREE).  The instructor's answer sheets are included on the CD.

The system requirements to run the CDs are:
*  Windows 95 or newer operating system. (Think you can manage that? Heh.)
    (95/98/NT/ME/2000/XP/Vista/etc.)
*  The latest version of Windows Media Player or a similar video player.  (Modern Windows Systems already have this installed. Or you can download one for free from Microsoft.com/mediaplayer)
*  Internet Explorer (Any recent version)

Could you tell me if on the Unit CDs are the signs all animated ?
--Don

Hello Don,
Yes, the signs on the CDs are "animated."
The CDs each contain a "Windows Media File" that plays in the standard Windows Media Player.  The file is a video of me signing the vocabulary and sentences from the lessons at the website.  For example, the Unit 1 video is set up as a test with 321 separately numbered questions in which approximately half are individual vocabulary and half are sentences from the lessons.  The other CDs also each have a couple hundred questions.  They are not perfect but they really quite functional.

Hello Bill!
I just found your website and I had some questions. I am a teenager and have been studying sign language for several years. The past year I have used the program Signing Naturally from Dawn Sign Press. I am living in Ghana, West Africa so I am unable to have a tutor. I was looking for some clarification on your lessons. Here are my questions:  Do I need to buy your [Unit] CD's to complete your courses online?
If I buy the CD's do I still need to use your webpage in completing the course or are the CD's all inclusive?
Thanks for your help!!  I really like your website it has a lot of good information!!
Sari H.

Sari,
Hi. The Unit CD's are simply me, in front of a video recorder, signing hundreds of sentences and vocabulary words. (About 1,300 in the first five CDs).  The CDs allow you to test yourself on the practice sentences that you see listed in the lessons. You don't "need" the CD's if you are just learning for fun.  In addition to the video test file, Each CD also contains a file that lists the answers so you can check your progress. If you want to use the website "offline" might I suggest you invest in the CD called "ASL University on CD."
Best wishes in your endeavors.

Question:  Do you have a physical address?
Answer:  No.  I am a spirit and I exist in-between dimensions.
(Heh)  Oh alright...YES, I have an address.  Visit the "contact" page for my address information. ASL University has literally thousands of pages. I put my contact information on that one page so it is easy to keep it current.

Question:  Is there an office?
Answer:  Does a home office count?  If so, then yes. I reckon you could visit if you want, but let me know ahead of time so we can clean up.
Note:  My cat thinks it is his office (so you may have to play along).

Question:  How secure is your site?
AnswerMy site isn't very secure.  I probably wouldn't order from my site.
BUT...I don't actually sell from my site.  It only looks like it.  Instead I use a Merchant Shopping Cart service based at CCNOW.com Their site is extremely secure. When you click on one of my "buy" links it takes you to their website.  They use 128 bit encryption and Scanalert "Hacker Safe" technology.   I also accept payments via "PayPal.com" or check/money order.

Question:  Where are the materials being shipped from?
Answer:  From our mailbox about a foot-and-a-half  to the left of the front door. (If you want a specific address...again...check the contact page.  If the postman, er...I mean postal dude...er...I mean postal carrier has already come and Belinda is running errands then she ships them from the post office that is closest to our home.  I don't know the address of the post office...I just know how to get there.

Question:  How soon will the items be shipped out after payment is made?
Answer:  Generally within 48 hours. If we missed the postal guy and Belinda isn't running errands then it's going to be 72 hours. Note: Belinda is my wife, not a postal employee; sometimes she does "go postal"--but that is a different story.  What happens is: people place an order. It shows up in my email box.  I forward it to my "shipping department," (um, that's my wife folks), and the shipping department, (Belinda) packs it up and sticks it in the mail box for the next pickup. Books and CDs go out very quick. I tell people if they don't have their order within 10 days, email me so I can check into it.  If I've screwed up (very rare since it doesn't take much brain power to hit the forward button) I tend to make it up to people in nice ways.

Love your web site. I ordered the CD 4/25/06. When can I expect delivery?
Thanks
Julia
Hi Julia,
Generally within 10 days.
Often in 5 days.
Two weeks at the outside.
Sometimes as quick as three days.
Once it took 21 days.
If it takes over 21 days please email us so we can check into it.

p.s. The "postal service" is often not very precise in their shipping times and thus we cannot control that.  More precision and definitiveness of orders would necessitate more work and effort.  Thus if you want precision in shipping you generally have to pay much more in fees (consider how much more things cost if you send them "overnight delivery" via Federal Express).  Thus your flexibility regarding shipping times translates to lower shipping charges for you.
But that isn't the reason why I don't strive to promise any particular or "quick" shipping time. The reason is I care about my wife.  She handles the shipping.  Trying to "precise and definite" creates stress.
So I ask her only to get them out within a reasonably decent period of time.
In the old days mail order companies used to always say: 6 to 8 weeks or 10 to 12 weeks.
Then things became more competitive and companies started adding fees and trying to outdo each other with faster and faster shipping times.
I'm not interested in competing. I'm not interested in the stress of trying to provide ultra fast shipping. If someone doesn't like my shipping times they are welcome (encouraged actually) to go elsewhere. I strive to get them out within a decent time frame and that is good enough for me. We've been doing this for 10 years and are still in business with 1,000's of satisfied customers.  (But I'm more interested in having a satisfied wife. What can I say?)

Hello Dr. Vicars,

My name is Roxanna Cooprider.  I am a home school mom who's knowledge and experience of sign language is suitable for conversing with Deaf who are patient with me.

I am part of a home school teaching coop where I am the most knowledgeable in  ASL of any of the other mothers.  As a result, I am
the one they ask to teach the course.  In the past I have always taught younger students, so my slow skills were still better than anything I could expect from them for our 10 week session.  (We meet for 10 weeks each semester, and each class is 55minutes long.)  Last spring they asked me to teach a high school class this fall.  I agreed, and then spent the summer searching for materials, I could afford, that would help me make the class worth the students' time.

That is when I came across your website, and became very excited.  There are six in the class, and we went together and ordered your ASLU Units 1-8 cd-roms that have the testing on them.  Your course is helping me so much.  It helps me know for sure that what we cover each week is on target.  Thank you for all of the hard work you have put into it.

I have distributed your Website disks to the class, and they are expected to do a lesson prior to each class.  We met for our 1st class
this past Monday, and tried to review the info and do the quiz for the lesson, but we ran out of time.  I wanted to ask you if I could have
permission to make testing disks that would have only the quiz and blank answer sheets on them that I could send home with the students so they could complete the test at home. They would then email me their answers, and I would collect the disks after they had completed the testing.  I'm asking to do this because I don't see us having enough time to get through the lesson quizzes each week.  Three of the six students have never taken any sign language courses at all, so they need extra time and attention during class.  Fifty-five minutes a week with them isn't going to stretch far enough.

Thank you for taking time to consider my request.

Sincerely,
Roxanna Cooprider
Roxanna,
Certainly.  Feel free to modify the disks however you would like.
I have so many dreams for that curriculum, but never enough time.
Take care,
Bill
